What is a soundkeeper? And what do they do? Long Island Soundkeeper Bill Lucey will be joining us to talk about his vital role on the water and with the Save the Sound program. Bill has more than 2 decades of experience studying and conserving marine life. His work as a commercial fisherman and fish and wildlife biologist go hand in hand as he works not only with volunteers who aid in beach clean-ups, but is able to teach children about the sound, assist fishers who depend on healthy habitats and work with legislators who make policies affecting the sound.
Bill is a CT native with a graduate certificate in fisheries management from the University of Oregon and a B.S in fisheries biology from the University of Vermont. After spending some time in Central America with the Peace Corps, he moved to Alaska where he worked both with local municipality and operating small boats fishing for halibut and salmon. Over the years he also brought in funding to upgrade fishing related infrastructure, a regional branding program and promoted beneficial fisheries polices both at state and federal level.
